David Smyth

As the Policy Response Unit (PRU) Joint Coordinator, David is developing working relationships with key stakeholders and government departments as well as exploring self-sustaining business models for the PRU in the long term. 

From 2021 to 2023, David served as the Research Fellow for Ireland’s first Climate Change Assessment Report (ICCA). In this role, he collaborated with the ICCA Academic Leads and their support teams. The ICCA was launched in January 2024. 

Prior to this position, from 2019 to 2021, he was the Chapter Scientist for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) Working Group I, specifically focusing on Chapter 2, which addressed the Changing State of the Climate System. 

David was involved with coordination and administration of the GCOS Reference Upper Air Network (GRUAN), taught undergraduate geography and climate change at Maynooth University, and completed a Teaching Fellowship at St. Patrick’s College, Dublin City University. He completed his PhD in 2013, which focused on the impact of climate change on the construction industry in Ireland.
